The truth about most SEO companies is that they do nothing for a website. They often do nothing because they can get away with doing nothing. This is an unfortunate truth, but as real a truth as any truth. There are plenty of search engine optimization companies that will do nothing and will never try to help a business get ranked higher on the search engines other than the initial on page SEO.
Most companies only do on-page SEO. Why? It is because on page, SEO only has to be done once, and then it can stay on the site. This means that most SEO companies are charging a fee to maintain work that may have been done months or years ago. This is a bad situation for any company because the SEO company is charging money for work that is not happening.
Why is this happening? Most of the people who say they are SEO experts are not really SEO experts. They are usually designers who learn that they can make more money by saying they know SEO. However, this is no excuse for larger SEO companies who charge thousands of dollars each month. Many of these sites do not do on page SEO for their clients because, “that would cost more money.” When, in actuality, they are already (the client) paying the SEO company a large sum every month for no work.
The larger SEO companies can get away with this because the website owners do not understand SEO therefore they have no basis to compare the SEO effort against at all. This means that the website owners are in the dark and the SEO companies take advantage of this fact. They even convince their clients that they should be happy with this situation.
The way they keep their clients is that the client does not lose ranking, however, they also do not again any ranking at all either. They just stay in the same spot and they pay for that spot whether or not any work has occurred (on page or off page).
Therefore, the smartest thing for a person or business to do is to educate himself or herself about the process of SEO to see if the company is actually doing anything for them. A company that is smart knows that a company can easily trick them because they know nothing about the process of SEO. One of the great problems with SEO is that fact. It is too hard to tell who is good and who is not good because the methods of SEO are not widely known. Therefore, a person who wants to have a great SEO provider must have some SEO knowledge his or herself. If they do not have this knowledge, then they can expect to lose money and receive no value in return.
